McLean is well known for his installations, performance art, sculpture, public art and painting. Having attended Glasgow school of Art, where he was taught by influential sculptor Anthony Caro, he then went on to Central Saint Martin’s School of art in London. His work continues to critique the art world and challenging the viewer to look further. Often placing himself as part of the work he has a humorous nature that gives life to his artistic practice. From the mid 1970s, while continuing to mount occasional performances, McLean turned increasingly to painting, in a witty and subversive parody of current expressionist styles, and to ceramics. Mclean represented Great Britain in the Venice Biennale of 1980, and has had exhibitions at Tate, The Modern Art Gallery in Vienna and Museum of Modern Art, Oxford.
